Mgła: Unveiling the Shadows of Polish Black Metal

Formed in the year 2000 in Krakow, Mgła, is a prominent Black Metal band founded by musicians Mikołaj Żentara and Maciej Kowalski. The band's journey began with the release of their first two EPs, "Presence" and "Mdłości," six years after their inception. In 2008, they marked their debut album, "Groza," released under Northern Heritage Records.

Mgła's live performances gained momentum in 2012, following the release of their second album, "With Hearts Toward None." The band, supported by ShellShocked and Silencer, expanded its presence across European festivals like Inferno Festival and Hellfest. Their breakthrough came with the 2015 album "Exercises in Futility," earning them critical acclaim and Metal Hammer's recognition.

In 2016, Mgła faced controversy as the opening act for Behemoth on the Europa Blasphemia Tour. Social media uproar led to the cancellation of their Wiesbaden concert. Despite accusations, Mgła continued their musical journey, touring Europe and releasing their fourth studio album, "Age of Excuse," in 2019.

While Mgła's lyrics and interviews steer clear of political or racist expressions, allegations of tolerating right-wing ideologies persist. Band members' affiliations with other projects, like Darkside's involvement with MasseMord, raised concerns. The band's association with Northern Heritage Records, linked to controversial ideologies, fueled debates within the Metal community.

Mgła stands among the key figures of Poland's second-generation Black Metal, drawing inspiration from Norway's early '90s Black Metal scene. Their music, characterized by melodic yet raw Black Metal, features intricate drumming and distinctive Moll-Guitar leads. Nihilistic and misanthropic themes, influenced by Friedrich Nietzsche and Charles Bukowski, create a dense and dark atmosphere.

Known for minimalist live performances, Mgła opts for a static stage presence, devoid of pyrotechnics or dramatic effects. The band's attire, entirely black with covered faces, aims to shift focus to the music, rejecting scene-specific accessories. This approach aligns with Mgła's desire to avoid creating a cult of personality.

Mgła's discography reflects their evolution, from the 2001 demo to the impactful "Exercises in Futility" and the latest release, "Age of Excuse." Their collaborations, such as "Crushing the Holy Trinity" split, showcase their influence on the Black Metal landscape.

As Mgła continues to carve its niche in the Black Metal realm, fans eagerly await their next sonic exploration. Stay tuned for announcements on upcoming concerts, and secure your tickets to witness Mgła's enigmatic performance live.
