Wardruna: A Sonic Journey into Norse Cultural Traditions

Unlock the Secrets of Wardruna's Nordic Musical Odyssey

Formation and Essence: The Guardians of Secrets

Wardruna, established in 2003 by Einar Selvik alongside Gaahl and Lindy-Fay Hella, is a Norwegian musical collective dedicated to bringing Norse cultural and esoteric traditions to life through captivating melodies. Their distinctive sound is crafted using an array of Nordic historical instruments, such as deer-hide frame drums, flutes, kraviklyra, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn, and lur. What sets Wardruna apart is their unconventional approach, incorporating non-traditional instruments like trees, rocks, water, and torches into their sonic tapestry.

Discography: Runes, Sayings, and The Guardian of Secrets

With five full-length albums, Wardruna has delved into Norse runes and the sayings of Odin from the Völuspá, creating an immersive musical journey. The name "Wardruna" itself translates to "the guardian of secrets" or "she who whispers," encapsulating the mystique that defines their music.

Historical Evolution: From Gorgoroth to Vikings

Formed in 2003, Wardruna emerged from the roots of Gorgoroth, with Selvik and Gaahl as former members. Their debut album, "Runaljod – Gap Var Ginnunga," released in 2009, laid the foundation for their unique sound. Success followed with subsequent albums like "Runaljod - Yggdrasil" and "Runaljod – Ragnarok," the latter reaching No. 1 on Billboard's World Albums chart.

Wardruna's influence extended beyond music when they contributed to the score of Vikings Season 2, showcasing their versatility. Despite the departure of Gaahl in 2015, Wardruna continued to captivate audiences with their acoustic album "Skald" in 2018.

Global Recognition and Ongoing Journey

Wardruna's global recognition soared, with their 2016 album "Runaljod – Ragnarok" reaching the pinnacle of the World Albums chart. The acoustic masterpiece "Skald" followed, leading to their signing with major labels Sony Music/Columbia Records in 2019. The release of "Kvitravn" in 2021, meaning "white raven," further solidified their status as musical trailblazers. The live album, "Kvitravn – First Flight of the White Raven," in 2022 captured the essence of their powerful stage presence.

Epic Comeback and Future Shows

Despite setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wardruna triumphantly returned to touring in 2022, presenting their mesmerizing performances across Europe and North America. Their presence at Midgardsblot marked a significant chapter in their ongoing musical saga.

Critical Acclaim: A Conjunction of Earthly and Ethereal

Critics have showered praise on Wardruna, with Metal Hammer's Jonathan Selzer describing their music as a "conjunction of the earthy, the organic, and the ethereal." Kerrang!'s Hannah May Kilroy acknowledged Wardruna as a profound entity, suggesting that they might be exactly what the modern world needs.
